Background
School administrators can access a variety of "Zooms" that function as dynamic lists in Edsby, which can be sorted, filtered, and used to get details on almost everything in Edsby. As a result, Edsby zooms are powerful tools for looking at and accessing everything happening in your school.
In this article, we'll look first at the tools you can use to sort, organize, and act on items in any Zoom; then, we'll look at a few examples of common Zoom activities.
Video Overview
Accessing Edsby Zooms
Edsby Zooms are found along the right side of the Edsby dashboard. Zooms are organized by object type or category, showing counts of Students, Staff, Classes, Groups and more.
Clicking on these categories, you can zoom in to see relevant details such as parent last login dates, or student performance and attendance history.
Zoom Tools
Filters
Filters are located on the left side of each Zoom. Filters are used to narrow down your list of Zoom objects, showing only those that match the filter selections.
For example, suppose that you would like to see only the records of Male students in Grades 3 and 4. You can select those in the filters and narrow down your search:
Search
Similar to the Filters, a Search field is provided that narrows down the list of objects to only those that match your search term. Search provides a quick, easy way to get to the record for a particular person, class, or group of interest:
Action menu
The action menu is located in the upper right corner of every Zoom, just beside the gear icon. This widget allows you to trigger actions for all the items in your Zoom, from inviting people to groups, to sending messages, to exporting Zoom details to a CSV file:
The options presented in the Action menu are specific for each Zoom. For example, the Students zoom (below) provides a range of actions that can be applied to students, or to the parents of the students shown.
Gear Icon
Sometimes you need to take action on a subset of records rather than all records matching a particular filter or search. The Gear icon, located at the top-right corner of each Zoom, may be used to expose a set of checkboxes to allow selection of individual records from a list.
Suppose, for example, that you filtered your student list to find male students in Grades 3 and 4. Now you want to send a message to the parents of two specific individuals. Clicking the gear Icon presents checkboxes beside each student's name, allowing you to select the exact students you want:
Checking the box at the top of the list will toggle all records on or off, saving time if you're wanting to select all records except a few:
Zoom Use Cases
See what's happening in Classes
A common use for the Classes zoom is for school administrators or department heads to access or observe classes, checking on curriculum, lesson plans, or other activities.
On opening the Classes zoom, all available classes are presented. Filters may be used to narrow the list of classes by grade level, subject area, or teacher.
Clicking on any class from the list will open the class detail page. While a few tools are restricted only to designated teachers, the default view of classes for any school administrator includes access to the class feed (discussion), the Content panel, and links to the Gradebook, Planner, and Report Card:
Check on parent activity
The Parents zoom provides a complete list of all parents/guardians and the students with whom they are associated. When rolling out accounts to parents, a common use for the parents zoom is to check on which parents have activated their accounts, and sending reminders to those who haven't.
In the Parents Zoom, details provided include children's names, phone numbers, email address, and the activity status or last login date for each parent account:
Filters for the Parent zoom are designed to quickly and easily differentiate parents who have activated their accounts from those that haven't:
Actions available for parents include issuing invitations for inactive accounts, as well as a Message Parents action that sends an Edsby message to parents selected in the Zoom:
Review student performance
The Students zoom provides a wealth of information, and is one of the most commonly-used tools in many schools.
The student zoom provides summaries of student performance, including overall average and numbers of attendance incidents for the current year, along with details such as grade level, homeroom teacher, and last activity date.
Details for individual students are available by clicking on any student name, opening that student's Panorama page:
Filters on the student zoom allow you narrow your student list based on overall average, as well as grade level, gender, and homeroom teacher. The example below is filtering for students in grade 9-12 with an average of 75% or less:
The action menu provides a range of options, from inviting selected students into a group, to sending messages to selected students and/or parents of those students:
